Abroad101 is pleased to introduce Theresa Corelli, one of our Global Ambassadors this Spring! Theresa will be spending this semester on a boat, Semester at Sea. She will be travelling to 11 different countries over the next few months and logging her journey through the Abroad101 bog along the way! This is a very unique study abroad experience, and we can’t wait to hear all about it.
Theresa grew up in New York with 5 siblings! So sharing quarters on a boat should be a breeze. She is currently a Junior at the University of Michigan and loves Ann Arbor. She is a Communications major and a Criminal Justice minor.
She submitted a favorite travel memory, and I think it’s best said in her own words:
My sister, Mary, and I traveled to the Greek islands for two weeks. We were trying to spend as little money as possible, so we figured we would take an overnight ferry from Athens to Santorini in order to get a free night of sleep…it all sounded so good at the time. The ferry ride was long and we both fell asleep for a while, as planned. Next thing we know we woke up to the ferry pulling away from Santorini, we had just missed our stop!
We ran downstairs and told the “Help” desk and they told us there was nothing they could do and we had to get off at the next stop, Anafi. Anafi is a small Greek island, population around 200, and it is not touristy at all. We had to spend the night in Anafi because the next ferry didn’t come until the following day. Little did we know, there was only one hotel on the island, only one restaurant, and everybody spoke Greek. Mary and I were trying to communicate to the locals what had happened and how we needed a room at the hotel, but all they said back was “whole island full.”
We didn’t really have many options at that point, so we put down our beach towels, used our bags as pillows, and slept on the beach! This was one of the craziest adventures of my life and it shows how you never know what you’re going to get while traveling! You have to be flexible and ready for anything that comes your way!
This is what happens when you take a girl from New York, and bring her to Wyoming! Watch out criminals!
Again, in her own words:
