Congratulations to Emily for winning this awesome prize from StudentUniverse after she wrote this riveting review about her study abroad experience on Abroad101’s website. We interviewed Emily to learn more about her experience traveling and studying in the British Isles over the summer with CIS Abroad!
1. Tell us why you decided to go abroad, and how you selected your program.
I always wanted to go abroad while in school. It’s a great opportunity to see the world and explore new cultures while you are still young and not worrying about your job, rent/mortgage, and other real life things. Once I decided I was going to go over the summer I went to the study abroad office and looked through their information. That is where I found CIS. I really liked the idea of being able to go to multiple countries during my experience. I really wanted to go on the CIS trip that went to England, Ireland, and Spain but I had another study abroad opportunity in Ghana so I went to just the England and Ireland portion. This study abroad experience gave me credit for my international business minor and earned me 9 credits.
2. Detail your favorite memory from your trip.
My favorite part was probably Giant’s Causeway. During the Ireland part of the trip, we unfortunately spent a lot of time on a bus, so being able to explore anything was so much fun. The view from Giants Causeway was amazing!!! It reminded me a bit of Inception!
3. Explain how studying abroad has impacted you
Study abroad has impacted me a lot. I made friends that I will remain friends with for the rest of my life! I have seen a few of the girls that I was really close with during the trip. They came to visit me at VT and went to a football game with me. One of the girls is also coming with me to the Sugar Bowl in January. So, the people I met on the trip I will definitely stay in touch with forever. I also made friends with many of the University students at Edge Hill when we studied there for 3 weeks. I was kind of worried about that part of the trip because I didn’t how much fun it would be to be in a small town in northern England for that long but the students I met there were amazing and I continue to keep in touch with many of them still today.
Why do you think it’s important for students to study abroad? What would you tell a student who says “I don’t think studying abroad is worth it”?
I think study abroad is completely worth it! It helps you to see what is out there around the world. Going to college can really make you stuck in your own little school bubble. But studying abroad really opens your eyes and you get to see so many interesting and amazing things that you would never imagine experiencing. You get to meet so many amazing people that can really change your life.
