10 New Things to Try Abroad: Part 1

Studying abroad is about getting outside of what is comfortable – stretching your arms and legs into something new! You’re probably saying, “I already agreed to spending four months in a foreign country outside of my comfort zone, what MORE do you want me to do!?” The answer is: A LOT. In order to reap the benefits of studying abroad, immerse yourself in everything your host country has to offer. Beyond experiencing all those new, fun things to do in your own city, don’t forget to dive into the cultures of the other destinations you visit as well! Here’s your best guide to help you jump into new adventures and become a bold, brave, daring individual.

Tip #1: Try a new food!
One of the biggest treats of living in a foreign country is the abundance of delicious cuisine. Every destination you visit has local delicacies that are sure to excite your taste buds no matter what food you like. Make sure to try at least one thing from each city you go to – even if it’s caterpillars cooked in the Costa Rican rainforest! If you end up hating it, you’ll at least return home with serious stories of your daring taste tests.

Tip #2: Go to a new sporting event!
Experience the many different sporting events popular to other countries by attending a local match. Sports in the U.S. are a huge part of our culture – this is true for other countries as well! In Great Britain, Cricket attracts a huge audience, while in South Africa, Rugby is an equally popular sport. Attending these games may seem intimidating at first if you are unfamiliar with the crowd, rules, chants, or teams but will definitely prove to be an unforgettable cultural experience.

Tip #3: Try something adventurous!
Whether that’s traveling alone for the first time, bungee jumping off a bridge in Australia, or sky diving in the Swiss Alps, spread your wings to give yourself the opportunity to do something you would not be able to at home. If you are deathly afraid of heights, perhaps bungee jumping is not for you but there are a variety of activities that are still very adventurous. Lonely Planet suggests activities such as biking in Venice, Italy, adventure climbing and trekking in Bolivia, or diving and snorkeling in Khao Lok, Thailand. Just make sure to research the adventure company and ensure they are safe and reliable!

Tip #4: Make a local friend!
There’s nothing better than befriending a local and sharing the native ambiance with an insider. Befriending people that live in the country where you are studying is a great opportunity to learn about the culture and immerse yourself in all your foreign country has to offer. Use these new friendships as a way to learn the language, visit hidden landmarks that you would have never found on your own, dine at local restaurants where you would have never eaten, and so much more!

Tip #5: Take the local transportation system!
If you are unfamiliar with using public transportation, or in a country where you don’t speak the local language, this can be very intimidating but also rewarding. Many cities abroad have intricate public transportation systems that are clean, affordable, safe, and very beneficial when traveling through large cities. Take the time to study the subway or train maps before leaving your apartment. That way, you will have a relatively familiar idea of what lines you will need to take to arrive at your destination. Also, many cities have trip planners on their public transit sites that will help you effortlessly plan your route!
