Dear Worldly Willie,
I’ve been here in Argentina for almost two whole months now and I just can’t seem to pick up the language! I’ve been trying real hard too! I met this wonderful guy from California who promised to teach me Spanish and we have “Spanish only” days on Mondays and Wednesday, yet when I’m out on the town alone, I just can’t seem to get past “Hola.” Help me Willie!
I admire your efforts to have Spanish Only days, but considering that you’re in Argentina, every day should be a Spanish Only day! I’m sure your hunk of California lovin’ is treating you well, but the best way to become truly comfortable with the language is to date someone local. First of all, what better way to experience the local culture than with a boy on your arm? He will show how to really experience Buenos Aires, if you know what I mean. Second of all, you will probably end up spending the majority of your free time with whomever your significant other may be, so make sure that he’s a true Argentine. This is important because it means that you will not be hanging out with Americans and therefore not speaking English. If you date an American while abroad, you can kiss all of those dreams of fluency good-bye. Go get ‘um tiger!
